Just finished reading last night, because stupid work shifts kept interrupting. I’m still not coherent enough to sort through everything, but there are some things (about a million) that stood out and that I have to write out.
First of all – I love the darkness of it all. It was BAM! right into the action from the start- the Ministry was overthrown almost right away, Hogwarts was taken over. Mad-Eye’s death (and poor Hedwig, too!) set the tone right away.
The journey was exactly how I hoped it would be, with them travelling around the country, revisiting all the places that had been of some importance to Voldemort or to Harry, while staying in hiding all the time.
Loved how Harry actually only destroyed one Horcrux and that it wasn’t just his journey alone like Dumbledore had set it out to be.
And talking about Horcruxes, I cannot believe that the ‘Harry is a Horcrux’ theory turned out to be true.
Also, for a moment there, when Harry “died” and the next chapter started with him waking up naked in some strange place, I actually thought that he had a) actually died b) his sacrificing himself had somehow gotten him a do-over of everything that had happened since Oct.31st 1981. I blame my sleep-deprived and emotionally drained brain for that, by the way. And a bow down to JKR for being able to avoid Harry’s death without using convenient plot-tweaks.
What sort of surprised me was that the whole stuff about the Dep. Of Misteries was never really brought up again. Harry just briefly passes by there, but what about the locked room we were supposed to find out about? And the veil? Mh..maybe rereading the book, which has to be done asap, will shed more light on that one, too.
I absolutely loved how Harry, Hermione and Ron's friendship was portrayed in this book...Hermione was absolutely outstanding, never faltering in her loyalty to Harry. And Ron really managed to redeem himself for that one little slip, too.
Snape’s story was absolutely heart wrenching – and it was upsetting to think that he died thinking he had been ‘tricked’ by Dumbledore, though. Thinking that Dumbledore had actually accepted Harry having to die for the greater good. For a moment there I thought that Dubledore had us all fooled, too. Thank god it was all explained in the end.
And Snape’s final “Look at me”, wanting to see Lily’s eyes as he died! *cries* Poor, poor, poor Snape – he is the tragic hero of this story.
Percy! I was so happy with the way they reunited - in complete Weasley style. He finally admitted what an idiot he had been and they welcomed him back with open arms. But then Fred’s death! Not Fred!!! And the way they described it made it all the more heart wrenching, with him dying with the shadow of his last laugh still on his face. I had been laughing a second before, when Fred was teasing Percy about making a joke, so it was a complete shock. I can’t even think about poor George and how it must have been for him.
I’m so sad for Lupin and Tonks, too – when Lupin made Harry Teddy’s godfather I so thought ‘he’s a goner’ but I didn’t expect Tonks to die, too. That whole scene with all the dead bodies in the Great Hall was so so so upsetting. *tear* At least now the Marauders are all reunited again. *bawls*
Draco wasn't really redeemed as I hoped, but then, despite everything, my heart went out just a little bit for the three Malfoys sitting at the table in the Great Hall, just happy to be safe and together.
But did they not arrest Lucius? That is weird. Are we supposed to think that they were just sent on their merry way after everything because of their last minute change of alliances?
I love that Draco was in the epilogue with his son Scorpius, though.
I have mixed feelings about the epilogue. I'm so happy that Harry got his big family that he never had in the end (poor kid being called Albus Severus, though lol) and Ron and Hermione (*squeeee* not even going to start on them), BUT it seemed copy/pasted out of a cliche fanfic, right dow to them all being at King's Cross on September 1st with all the kids running around.
But....Hugo and Rosie!! No squeeing in the world will ever be squeeing enough!
Also, Neville was the MAN! The leader of the resistance at Hogwarts, killer of Nagini (felt that that part was a tiny bit too convenient, but who cares) and now Herbology teacher. *squeezes Neville*
And Mrs. Weasley! WHOA! I'm glad we got to see her in a duel and that she was the one to take Bellatrix down. And she so did have one of the best lines in the book! HEH!
I always thought maybe Neville should have been the one to kill Bella, to avenge his parents, but even if that didn’t happen Neville has already a million other glorious moments in the book.
What else? What else? Halfway through the book I kept thinking - there is so much left and she can never fit it all in the next 300 pages/200 pages/100 pages...and so on, but what was I thinking? She is JK Rowling and of course she wrapped up every loose end (well, almost) and managed to stick in a million twists that no one could have seen coming and managed to make us sink into depression now that it is over.
[shippy moment] RON and HERMIONE!!!! It was PERFECT!! Right from the start, with Ron and his book on girls given to him by the twins (can’t even type twins without getting teary-eyed – oh why did he have to die??), to all the dancing at the wedding (loved seeing Krum at the wedding desperate to find a girl *lol*), to them falling asleep holding hands (at least that’s what Harry though but I wholeheartedly agree with him), to everything else! And then finally, the perfect kiss right before the battle – and I cracked up when Harry was all “Guys, seriously? Are you doing this NOW?”
Ok, sorry for all the rambling and random things, but this stuff is all swirling around in my head right now and it is so overwhelming. If I only had a Pensieve to put it all in.
Anyway, it’s OVER.
I might have to call that hotline number that helps you get through the emotional stress of Harry Potter being done *lol*
*falls over*
